Types of Family-Based Immigration
Immediate Relatives (No Numerical Limits)
Spouses of U.S. citizens
Unmarried children under 21 of U.S. citizens
Parents of U.S. citizens (if citizen is 21 or older)
Family Preference Categories (Subject to Annual Limits)
F1: Unmarried adult children of U.S. citizens
F2A: Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of permanent residents
F2B: Unmarried adult children of permanent residents

The Petition Process (Form I-130)
Step 1: File the Petition
U.S. citizen or permanent resident files Form I-130

Wait for USCIS approval (processing times vary)
Step 2: Wait for Priority Date
Immediate relatives proceed directly to next step
Preference categories must wait for priority date to become current
Check monthly Visa Bulletin for updates
Step 3: Consular Processing or Adjustment of Status
For applicants outside the U.S., complete DS-260 online application, attend medical examination, gather required documents, attend consular interview, and receive immigrant visa if approved.
For applicants in the U.S., file Form I-485 when priority date is current, attend biometrics appointment, prepare for adjustment interview, and receive green card if approved.
